Gulf Mercantile Exchange, Shanghai Futures Exchange Strengthen Derivatives Market Cooperation

    April 22, 2025Updated:July 26, 20252 Mins Read

The Gulf Mercantile Exchange (GME), the first international commodities and derivatives exchange in the Middle East, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Shanghai Futures Exchange (ShFE) to establish a framework for strategic cooperation between the derivatives markets of the Gulf region and China.

‏The MoU aims to enhance collaboration in key areas, including the development of joint contracts, the exchange of insights on market development, joint research, and the implementation of investor education and awareness initiatives. The agreement reflects a shared commitment by both parties to promote market transparency and support the development of futures markets in the region.

‏Commenting on the agreement, Raid Al-Salami, Managing Director of GME, stated: “We are proud to partner with the Shanghai Futures Exchange, one of the most advanced exchanges globally. This MoU marks a significant milestone in fostering stronger cooperation between China and the Gulf in the commodities trading space. Through the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and strategic vision, we can pave the way for regionally relevant futures contracts, increase market transparency, and enhance investor participation on both sides.”

‏The agreed areas of collaboration under the MoU include sharing knowledge related to market development, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks; supporting relevant research and studies; facilitating the exchange of personnel to promote mutual understanding between the markets; and developing joint educational programs for investors and market members.

‏This strategic partnership aligns with GME’s efforts to position the Gulf region as a global commodities trading hub and supports ShFE’s international expansion strategy to connect with major global markets.
