The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has signed a cooperation agreement with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The goal is to enhance the country’s intellectual property (IP) framework and align it with global best practices.
The agreement was signed during the UAE delegation’s participation in the 66th session of the WIPO General Assemblies, held in Geneva.
Minister of Economy and Tourism, H.E. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, called the agreement a major step in strengthening the institutional structure of the UAE’s IP system. It supports the national vision of building a dynamic, innovation-led economy protected by robust legislation and services.
According to H.E., collaboration with WIPO will accelerate the UAE’s digital transformation, boost capacity building, and promote knowledge integration. These efforts will solidify the UAE’s position as a global hub for creative industries and the new economy.
Intellectual property, he emphasized, is a core driver of the UAE’s knowledge-based economy. It fosters innovation and entrepreneurship across science, technology, and the creative sectors.
The agreement, signed by H.E. Abdullah bin Touq and WIPO Director General Daren Tang, focuses on policy exchange, joint initiatives, and knowledge sharing. It encourages the adoption of advanced IP tools and strategies tailored to the UAE’s needs.
The two parties will form a joint task force to oversee implementation, monitor progress, and update action plans. The areas of focus will include digital infrastructure, institutional capacity, and policy alignment between innovation, education, and industry.
This partnership reaffirms the UAE’s leadership in shaping the global IP landscape. It also highlights the country’s commitment to protecting creators’ rights and fostering a resilient, innovation-first economy in line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision.
