UAE Leads in Building Smart, Sustainable Cities of the Future

    July 20, 20252 Mins Read

The UAE has made remarkable strides in developing smart and sustainable cities, earning global recognition through a comprehensive national vision rooted in digital transformation, innovation, and a firm commitment to sustainability.

Experts highlight that the UAE’s approach goes beyond infrastructure upgrades. It is a holistic strategy that places people at the center of policy and urban planning. The country has become a global model by integrating advanced digital technologies into urban development to improve the quality of life and drive sustainable growth.

Frédéric Godemel, Executive VP of Energy Management at Schneider Electric, praised the UAE’s strategic investments in digital infrastructure and sustainability. He noted the country’s early adoption of electrification and digitization, which is known as “Electricity 4.0,” as a key factor in building resilient cities capable of tackling climate change and rising energy demand.

Godemel emphasized that with electricity demand in the Middle East expected to rise by 10% by 2030, the UAE is staying ahead by adopting decentralized microgrids and smart building systems powered by IoT, AI, and cloud technologies. He cited pilot projects in the UAE that have cut energy consumption by up to 50% in major complexes.

International reports confirm that the UAE is among the world’s top investors in smart cities, particularly in AI, IoT, data centers, and modern telecom networks. In 2025, combined smart city investments in the UAE and Saudi Arabia reached AED 185 billion.

Dr. Nidal Abou Zaki, Founder and Managing Director of Orient Planet, stressed that the UAE’s digital platforms—like UAE PASS and u.ae—enable seamless user experiences and accelerate smart technology adoption. He highlighted Abu Dhabi’s “TAM” platform and Dubai’s “DubaiNow” as leading examples of integrated digital services.

Both cities ranked among the global top five in the 2025 Smart City Index, with Dubai moving to 4th place and Abu Dhabi to 5th, reaffirming the UAE’s leadership in building the cities of the future.
