AI, Arab Storytelling Heritage: Between Preservation and Distortion

    July 23, 2025Updated:August 10, 20252 Mins Read

In a Money Secrets podcast episode recorded during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, economic content creator Ahmed Elgamal hosted Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

Dr. Al Musallam emphasized that Arabs, as a traditionally oral society, have long relied on storytelling to pass down knowledge and identity. While oral narratives and folk tales were once the main mediums, AI now offers interactive ways to revive historical figures like Ibn Sina and Taha Hussein in virtual settings.

However, he warned of the dangers. AI, if misused, could manipulate historical testimonies by altering voices and creating fabricated narratives—what he described as a “cultural crime” that threatens the authenticity of oral history.

The Sharjah Institute for Heritage, he noted, actively safeguards cultural identity through awareness campaigns, the annual publication of 100 books, and events like the Sharjah Heritage Days and the International Storytellers Forum. The Institute also launched the “Sharjah School of Storytelling,” encouraging families to pass down traditions collectively.

Dr. Al Musallam stressed that identity is rooted in language, dress, customs, and terminology. He urged people to use Arabic expressions proudly rather than adopting foreign terms out of misplaced admiration.

He concluded with a powerful reminder: “Heritage is the root on which the future stands.”
