EGA Launches Pilot Project for Next-Gen Smart Smelting Technology

    July 14, 2025Updated:July 14, 20252 Mins Read

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has inaugurated the final reduction cell in its pilot project for next-generation smart smelting technology at its Al Taweelah site. This milestone paves the way for wider deployment of the advanced EX technology in the future.

A Leap in Energy Efficiency and Global Leadership

The EX technology, now in its tenth generation, was developed in-house by EGA to boost aluminium output while reducing energy consumption and emissions. The pilot project is a cornerstone of EGA’s growth strategy and reinforces its global leadership in aluminium smelting innovation.

Homaid Abdulla Al Shemmari, EGA Chairman, stated that the EX technology strengthens EGA’s position as a global industry leader. He highlighted plans to implement the same technology at EGA’s upcoming facility in Oklahoma—the first new primary aluminium plant in the U.S. since 1980.

Strong Initial Performance and Global Applicability

CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban emphasized that the pilot project marks a strategic step and reflects EGA’s legacy of innovation. He noted that the EX cells outperformed expectations during initial testing, demonstrating the technology’s strong potential.

Construction on the ten pilot cells began in late 2024, with the first operational since mid-June. Over 30 years, EGA has developed and deployed proprietary smelting technologies across its operations, significantly improving efficiency.

The company also integrates Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies through its digital transformation initiative launched in 2021. With over 80 applications implemented, EGA has generated a financial impact exceeding USD 100 million while improving safety and sustainability.
